Engraved Kaleidoscope Gifts: What to Write in 8 Words
An engraved kaleidoscope carries a short line of text on its brass body: a name, a date, a milestone or a company. At Studio Yabaye the limit is 8 words. This guide explains where that limit comes from, which inscription formats fit inside it, and how to send text that can go straight to the laser.
The second half is practical: 25 example inscriptions grouped by occasion, a list of common errors, and a submission checklist. It applies to a single personalized kaleidoscope gift and to corporate orders with a different name on every piece.
How laser engraving on brass works
Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to heat a very small spot on the metal surface. In engraving, the energy at that spot is high enough to vaporize material, so the result is a shallow recess that can often be felt with a fingertip.
Brass is a reflective metal. It reflects a large share of the beam and conducts heat away from the spot quickly. For this reason bare brass is normally engraved with a fiber laser working at a wavelength of 1064 nm. A CO2 laser cannot mark bare brass or copper directly and needs a coating applied to the metal first.
Two properties of the process matter to the person writing the inscription:
The inscription is cut into the metal. It is not a print, a sticker or a coating, and it cannot be wiped off or corrected after engraving.
The laser reproduces the supplied text character for character. It does not check spelling, capitalization or dates.
Why the limit is 8 words
The 8-word limit is a Studio Yabaye rule. It is not a limit of the laser. It comes from the geometry of the object.
A kaleidoscope body is a tube. A laser beam is sharp only at its focal distance. On a flat plate the distance between lens and surface is constant. On a curved surface that distance changes continuously, and areas that fall outside the focal range come out with lower contrast, uneven depth and poor readability. The greater the curve, the harder it is to hold quality across the text.
This leaves two ways to fit more words on a tube: wrap the text further around the circumference, or reduce the letter height. Text that wraps far around the tube cannot be read in one view; the reader has to rotate the piece. Small letters on a curved, reflective brass surface lose legibility. Eight words is the amount of text the studio engraves at a letter height that reads at arm's length, in one view, without rotating the tube.
What to check: read the inscription aloud once. If it takes more than one breath, it is too long for a tube.
How words are counted
Each word separated by a space counts as one word.
A date written "12 June 2026" counts as 3 words. "June 2026" counts as 2. "2026" counts as 1.
A year range written "1996 to 2026" counts as 3 words.
An initial ("J.") or a title ("Dr.") counts as one word.
"and" and "&" each count as one word.
Commas and full stops are not counted.
Four formats that fit in 8 words
1. Name + date. The most compact format. It records who and when, and leaves the reason to the giver's card. Example: "Anna and David, 12 June 2026".
2. Name + milestone. The recipient and the event: years of service, an anniversary number, an award title. Example: "Maya and Tom, 25 Years".
3. Short dedication. A direct line from giver to recipient. It works when it is a sentence the giver would say in person, not a quotation. Example: "To Daniel, With Love, Sarah".
4. Company + year. The standard corporate format. It can be extended with the recipient's name so that each piece in an order is individual. Example: "Sofia Alvarez, Northfield Partners, 2026".

What not to do
Long quotations. A line of poetry or a full sentence from a speech does not fit in 8 words, and cutting it changes its meaning. Put the quotation in the card. Put the name and date on the brass.
Small logos, unless agreed in advance. A logo is not text. Fine lines and small lettering inside a logo may not resolve on a curved tube. Do not assume a logo is included. Ask first through the contact page and send the artwork with the inquiry.
Unchecked spelling. The most frequent errors are in names: a missing accent, "Ann" for "Anne", "Mc" for "Mac", a surname the buyer has only heard and never seen written. Copy the name from a source the recipient wrote, such as an email signature.
Ambiguous date formats. "06/12/2026" is 6 December in most of the world and 12 June in the United States. Write the month as a word.
Text that will go out of date. A job title or a street address may change. A name and a year do not.
How to submit the text
Studio Yabaye has no mock-up or approval step before production, and no photo of the finished piece is sent before shipping. The text received is the text engraved. The buyer is the only proofreader.
Send the inscription as typed text, not as a screenshot or a photo of handwriting. Then:
Final text only. One version. No "or", no alternatives, no "whichever looks better".
Exact capitalization. Type every letter in the case it should be engraved.
Exact date format. Day, month as a word, full year - or month and year - or year only. Type it exactly as it should appear.
Exact punctuation. Commas, full stops and apostrophes are engraved as supplied.
Word count. Count the words using the rules above and confirm the total is 8 or fewer.
What to check: paste the text into a blank document and have a second person read it letter by letter against the source for each name.
Ordering time for gift season
Each piece is built in the studio: brass tube, cut, fitted and hand-finished, with front-surface mirror systems and an object wheel that is poured and composed by hand, so no two pieces are alike. Engraving adds a production step, and international shipping adds transit time. Studio Yabaye is based in Israel and ships worldwide.
Order early for December delivery. For a retirement, an award ceremony or a closing with a fixed date, state the date the piece is needed when ordering and ask for confirmation that it can be met before the order is placed.
Corporate orders: from 10 units, individual names
Corporate orders start at 10 units. Each piece can carry a different inscription, which is how recognition gifts are normally specified: one fixed element (company, year, award title) and one variable element (the recipient's name). Studio Yabaye commissions include Coldwell Banker Caine (75 engraved pieces, 2025); the process is documented in the case study.
For a multi-name order, send one spreadsheet with one row per piece and the full inscription for each row written out in a single cell, exactly as it should be engraved. Do not send a list of names with a separate instruction to "add the company and year to each". Every row must pass the 8-word count on its own. Details on corporate orders are on the corporate gifts page and in Corporate Gifts People Actually Keep.
Submission checklist
The inscription is 8 words or fewer, with each part of a date counted as a word.
Every name is copied from a written source and checked letter by letter.
Capitalization is typed exactly as it should be engraved.
The month is written as a word and the year has four digits.
Punctuation is exactly as it should be engraved.
There is one final version, with no alternatives.
A second person has read the text.
The text is sent as typed text, not as an image.
Any logo request has been raised and agreed before ordering.
The required delivery date is stated in the order.
For corporate orders: one row per piece, full inscription per row, minimum 10 units.
FAQ
How many words can be engraved on a Studio Yabaye kaleidoscope?
The limit is 8 words. It is a studio rule based on legibility: the kaleidoscope body is a curved brass tube, and a longer text would need either smaller letters or a wider wrap around the circumference. A date such as "12 June 2026" counts as 3 of the 8 words.
How is the engraving made on the brass?
The inscription is laser engraved on the brass body. A focused beam heats a very small spot and vaporizes a thin layer of metal, leaving a shallow recess. Bare brass is normally engraved with a fiber laser at 1064 nm, because brass reflects much of the beam and conducts heat away quickly.
Will I see a proof or a photo before the piece ships?
No. There is no mock-up or approval step before production, and no photo of the finished piece is sent before shipping. The text you submit is engraved as received, so it must be final and spell-checked, with exact capitalization and date format, at the moment you send it.
What should I engrave for an anniversary?
The formats that fit in 8 words are two names and a date, or two names and the number of years. Examples: "Anna and David, 12 June 2026" is 6 words, and "Maya and Tom, 25 Years" is 5 words. Write the month as a word so the date reads the same in every country.
Can a company logo be engraved?
Not by default. Small logos are engraved only when agreed in advance, because fine lines and small lettering inside a logo may not resolve on a curved tube. Send the artwork with your inquiry before ordering. A text inscription of up to 8 words, such as company name and year, needs no prior agreement.
Can each piece in a corporate order have a different name?
Yes. Corporate orders start at 10 units, and each piece can carry its own inscription of up to 8 words. Send one spreadsheet row per piece with the full text written out exactly as it should be engraved. A previous commission of this type was 75 engraved pieces for Coldwell Banker Caine in 2025.
